In a remarkable achievement, two distinguished lecturers from the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) have clinched prestigious grants worth over N900 million. Dr. Margaret Ilomuanya and Dr. Mutiat Bolanle Ibrahim, recognized experts in their respective fields, are set to revolutionize health and agriculture across the African continent.

These groundbreaking grants are part of the Grand Challenges Africa (GC Africa) initiative, a flagship program supported by the Science for Africa Foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The initiative aims to propel innovative research in climate adaptation for agriculture and the development of safer, more accessible contraceptives

technology secured US$359,100 for her pioneering research project titled: “The Cervical Mucus Barrier as a Target for Artificial Neural Network Inspired Novel Blends of Electrospun Scaffolds.” Her mission? To create a revolutionary contraceptive device that mimics the natural cervical mucus barrier, preventing unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections.

Dr. Mutiat Bolanle Ibrahim’s Quest: Herbal Bioactives for Female Contraception

Dr. Ibrahim, hailing from the Department of Pharmacognosy, secured a grant of US$259,801.30 for her research titled: “Characterization of Herbal Bioactives for the Development of Spermicides for Female Contraception.” Her goal? To identify and characterize herbal compounds that can act as spermicides—an affordable and effective alternative to conventional contraceptives.
