The University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) and Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH) have unveiled advanced endoscopic techniques to improve treatment options for pancreatic cancer and other medical conditions. This significant development aims to enhance patient care and foster medical advancements in Nigeria.

In a recent announcement, Prof. Ikpeme Asanye Ikpeme, Chief Medical Director (CMD) of UCTH, revealed that the institution is now a pioneer in adopting advanced endoscopic procedures within the country. Speaking in Calabar, Cross River State, Ikpeme highlighted that UCTH is the second government-owned facility in Nigeria to implement these cutting-edge techniques, following OAUTH.

The CMD elaborated on the collaboration with Massachusetts General Hospital in the United States, which is instrumental in advancing endoscopic practices in Cross River State and across Nigeria. "We have had a basic endoscopy program in place for years," Ikpeme noted, "but it was time to upscale our services and introduce advanced endoscopy. Our partnership with Massachusetts General Hospital, supported by OAUTH, is pivotal in achieving this milestone."

The advanced endoscopic procedures being introduced include Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS). These techniques are expected to significantly enhance diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities for conditions such as pancreatic cancer.

Ikpeme also emphasized that this initiative would not only drive medical tourism but also improve access to high-quality healthcare services for Nigerian citizens. The integration of these advanced techniques represents a substantial leap forward in the healthcare sector, promising better outcomes for patients and contributing to the overall advancement of medical care in the region.
