UDUS-DELS Scholar Forum Holds Tutorial For 200-level Students

The Department of English and Literary Studies’ Scholar Forum, a committee under the department's association organised a tutorial for the 200-level students of the department on Thursday 9th, 2024 at the A132 lecture hall of the main campus, Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto.

The session was blessed with the presence of the department’s president OLASUNKANMI OLUWASEYI, Chairman of DELS Scholar Forum, AGBOOLA HABEEB and many others from the department.

The development aimed to cover the lapses and also enhance the student's academic performance in the area of studies concerned progressively with the course Phonology of English Language and was facilitated by Abdulkareem Semiu Laja a 300-level student of English and Literary Studies

Mr. Laja began by defining the Phonology of English as the organisation, grouping, patterning and distribution of the basic sounds of natural languages ( vowels and consonants). It studies the restrictions and regular patterns of sound combination. 

The symbols which are used to indicate sound in Phonology are called slanting.

The guest speaker progressed in elaborating on the branch of Phonology in the English Language as in segmental and supra segmental Phonology. Stating that the segmental deals with individual phonemes (speech sounds) such as vowels and consonants. 

Whereas, the suprasegmental features are speech attributes that accompany consonants and vowels but are not limited to single sounds and often extend over syllables, words or phrases. It is also known as prosody which includes intonation patterns, stress placement, rhythm and sounds extending over syllables, words and phrases.

Besides, he also explained the four major structures of syllables.

According to Abdulrauf Fatimah, a 200-level student of the Linguistics department, “The tutorial was more fascinating seeing the class being interactive between the students and the facilitator”.

She continued; the course lecturer had pronounced a day before this tutorial to be holding the test for Phonology of English Language. Thereafter, l was able to give full attention and also achieved a lot from the training.

Bolarinwa Mudathir a 200-level student of the Linguistics department said “Although I came late to the tutorial nevertheless, l achieved a lot, especially in the area of study l find difficult which seemed to be syllable structure in the English Language”. Expressing his heartfelt feelings towards the tutorial: this is a wonderful initiative that promotes one’s performance. To me it was so energetic and l hope that this form of development would make us excel in our areas of study.

Abdulhakeem Bashiroh Kehinde a 200-level student of English and Literary Studies said having been in the hall waiting for the facilitator, the bordering for the next day’s test overwhelmed me. I was thinking otherwise either to leave the session or go out to read for the upcoming test.

Not too far the facilitator arrived. I was seated at the front and would not like to interrupt the class so I decided to remain there for the tutorial.

She continued: it was like the facilitator knew the course and subfield of study giving concern most. He started with the theme Phonology of English. I was elated to give a listening ear and the class was more interactive carrying everyone along. The upcoming test will not be difficult anymore after today's tutorial, said Bashiroh.

According to Abdulhakeem Bashir Taiwo, the tutorial was a blessing to every attendee. And l hope every one of us can do better in the upcoming test and examination with the knowledge of Phonology in English injected us from this tutorial. I urged the Deal Scholar Forum to continue in their capacity to enhance our knowledge with this kind of initiative.

He furthered that today's tutorial was more energetic and believed that it would help me and my fellow students.
