UDUS Students Weigh the Benefits and Drawbacks of AI in Academics

A recent survey of students at Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS) has revealed a mixed perspective on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in academics.
While some students appreciate the assistance AI provides in solving problems and completing assignments, others express concerns about over-reliance and the potential negative impact on critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Students who use AI-powered tools, such as ChatGPT, report that it has made learning easier and more accessible. AI has been particularly helpful in handling assignments, projects, and seminars, providing personalized learning experiences and assistance in solving complex problems.
However, some students and faculty members warn that AI should be used wisely to avoid over-reliance and ensure it remains a tool for learning rather than a shortcut. They caution that AI-generated information may not always be reliable and that students must verify the accuracy of the information.
Dr. A. Dandare, Exam Officer of the Biochemistry Department, advises students to use AI as a starting point, but not as their only source of knowledge. He emphasizes the importance of critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which may be compromised by over-reliance on AI.
The debate surrounding AI in academics highlights the need for students, faculty members, and institutions to develop guidelines and best practices for the use of AI in learning. By acknowledging both the benefits and drawbacks of AI, UDUS students and faculty members can work together to ensure that AI is used in a way that enhances learning and promotes academic excellence.
