The Senate of the University of Abuja (now Yakubu Gowon University) has approved the expulsion of 28 students and the withdrawal of certificates from 15 former students over a range of disciplinary offences.

The Senate of the University of Abuja (now Yakubu Gowon University) has approved the expulsion of 28 students and the withdrawal of certificates from 15 former students over a range of disciplinary offences.

The decision was reached at the institution’s 191st Regular Senate Meeting after reviewing the report and recommendations of the Student Disciplinary Committee (SDC).

According to a statement issued by the Acting Director of the Information Directorate, Dr. Habib Yakoob, the affected students were found culpable of serious infractions, including:

  • Threat to life and assault
  • Examination malpractice
  • Criminal conspiracy
  • Burglary and theft
  • Cult-related activities
  • Possession and use of hard drugs
  • Falsification of ‘O’ Level results
  • Failure to appear before the disciplinary committee despite repeated invitations

In addition to the expulsions, Senate approved the withdrawal of certificates of 15 former students who failed to honour multiple invitations from the disciplinary committee.

However, not all cases resulted in sanctions. Nine students were exonerated following investigations, while 33 others received official warnings for various offences, including conspiracy, hostel racketeering, and fighting.

The Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Senate, Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, reaffirmed the university’s zero-tolerance stance on misconduct. He emphasized that the institution remains committed to maintaining a safe, orderly, and conducive learning environment, adding that rules and regulations will continue to be enforced without compromise.

The actions underscore the university’s resolve to uphold academic integrity and institutional discipline.
