UNIABUJA Partners with U.S. Institutions to Launch Hypertension Treatment Programme in Nigeria

In 2020, the Hypertension Treatment in Nigeria (HTN) programme was launched through a collaboration between the University of Abuja (Nigeria), Washington University in St. Louis (USA), and Northwestern University (USA). This initiative aims to improve the management and care of hypertension across 60 primary healthcare centres in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nigeria.

Spearheading this programme is Professor Dike Ojji, Lead Investigator of the Cardiovascular Research Unit, Department of Internal Medicine, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, University of Abuja. Professor Ojji, who also serves as a Consultant Physician/Cardiologist at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital in Gwagwalada, Abuja, leads the adaptation and implementation of the HEARTS programme.

The HTN initiative employs a hybrid type II effectiveness implementation approach, with the HEARTS strategy designed to enhance cardiovascular care through evidence-based practices. The programme also incorporates an interrupted time series design for its evaluation, as part of clinical trial NCT04158154. This collaborative effort marks a significant step toward addressing hypertension challenges in Nigeria's healthcare system.
