A senior lecturer at the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Anthony Asekhauno, has been accused by multiple female students of sexual assault.
Alumnae and current students of the university have taken to social media to call out Asekhauno for his alleged misconduct. One former student, @Chikamma, shared her experience on Twitter, stating that Asekhauno deliberately failed her in a course until he raped her in his office during her final year. ” Anthony Asekhuno failed my logic deliberately 3 times until he raped me in his office in final year and gave me a C. I kept failing because I refused to date him”, she wrote.
This incident reportedly occurred in 2018 when Asekhauno was the Head of the Department of Philosophy, and other lecturers who were aware of his sexual harassment were afraid of his influence. Chikamma expressed her disappointment that Asekhauno is still teaching at UNIBEN despite his disgraceful behavior and previous involvement in money laundering. “I know he’s still teaching in Uniben. He was disgraced and proved for money laundering but everyone knew he was a sexual harasser and rapist and turned a blind eye “, she added.

Other female students came forward to support Chikamma's claims, sharing their own stories of inappropriate behavior and threats from the lecturer. Some of us that graduated from that department went through serious trauma. From the improper touching of ladies in uncomfortable places of their bodies to threatening them from refusing to do what he wants. One day I hope he gets to suffer for it.”, one remarked.
