The University's management expressed dissatisfaction with the tariff hike, stating that it cannot sustain the increased cost.

The University of Benin (UNIBEN) in Benin City, Edo State, has implemented load shedding due to a significant increase in its electricity bill following the recent tariff hike by the Nigerian government.

In a memo titled "Update on Power Supply to University Community," the University's management expressed dissatisfaction with the tariff hike, stating that it cannot sustain the increased cost. UNIBEN reported a consumption of N280 million for the month of April 2024, compared to the previous bill of about N80 million.

UNIBEN has initiated negotiations with the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) regarding this matter. The statement explains, "It has become necessary to inform the Provost, Deans, Directors, and members of the University community about the adverse effects of the 340% increase in electricity tariff by NERC, particularly for Band A consumers, to which the University belongs."

The statement further elaborates, "Our April bill is about N280 million, compared to the former bill of about N80 million. Therefore, Management has decided to implement load shedding to reduce costs while negotiations with BEDC continue. Normal power supply will be restored once negotiations are finalized."

Management expressed gratitude for the support and understanding of the University community, while also regretting any inconvenience caused by the tariff increment.
