UNICAL VC Urges History Graduands to Uphold Legacy of Growth and Service
UNICAL has inducted History graduates into the Historical Society of Nigeria. The VC urged them to uphold history’s legacy, embrace self-growth, and make meaningful contributions to society.
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Prof. Florence Banku Obi, has charged graduands of the Department of History and International Studies to uphold the legacy of personal growth and contribute meaningfully to societal development.
Prof. Obi, represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Eno Grace Nta, gave the charge while declaring open the 3rd Induction Ceremony of graduands into the Historical Society of Nigeria (HSN), held at the Senate Chambers Auditorium of the institution.

Congratulating the inductees, she described them as custodians of history, stressing that historians play a vital role in shaping the future by interrogating human experiences, cultural dynamics, and societal evolution. She urged them to deploy their knowledge and skills for the benefit of their communities and the nation at large.

Head of Department, History and International Studies, Prof. Dave Imbua, also commended the graduands for their dedication and resilience. He described the induction as a new beginning, noting that as professional historians, they are equipped to present authentic narratives of Nigeria’s past. “As professional historians, we trust that you are equipped to present the true history of Nigeria. The world is waiting for you,” he said.
Similarly, the Acting National President of the Historical Society of Nigeria (HSN), Dr. Zara Kwaghe, represented by Prof. Grace Brown, congratulated the inductees and emphasized that history serves as the foundation for other disciplines.

Delivering the induction lecture titled “The Secret of Hidden Curriculum,” Prof. Winifred Akoda highlighted the importance of historical studies in fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills. She encouraged the graduands to embrace self-development and adapt to the demands of the digital era.
The event featured the presentation of HSN membership certificates to inductees, as well as awards to outstanding students and stakeholders. It was well attended by members of the Historical Society of Nigeria from across the country.
