University of Calabar, UNICAL  VC Prof. Florence Obi  Gets Kudos for Embracing Equity in Her Administration.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof Florence Obi has been commended for showcasing equity in the administration of the affairs of the institution.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration (DVC) of the University of Calabar, Prof Eno Grace Nta made the commendation at the marking of the International Women's Day Celebration event held at the premises of the Senior Sports Staff Club of the institution describing her as one who loves, preaches and is passionate about gender equity.

Prof Eno Nta commenting on the theme of the event " Embrace Equity" stated that Prof Florence Obi has appointed several women as Directors in her administration but noted that no man has been denied his rights or due

She said that Prof Florence Obi's led administration has given every staff enough room to develop, grow and aspire to achieve their dreams irrespective of gender.

The DVC Admin who frowned at acts of inequity perpetrated against women notably in the political arena charged the womenfolk to brace up to the challenge of education, digital literacy and exposure.

In an address at the occasion, the Executive Director of the Centre for Gender Development,(CGD) at the University of Calabar, Dr Brenda Akpan, said that women who have risen to the pinnacle of stardom deserve to be celebrated, adding that this year's event was primarily intended to identify, celebrate and increase the visibility of women's achievements with a bid to help forge equity and equality and accelerate gender parity.

Dr Brenda Akpan stated that there are many women achievers in the world, who in her words " have broken the glass ceiling of achievements in different spheres of human existence".

She cited the case of the current Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof Florence Obi who in the past two years has redirected the policies of administration positively and constructively to the amazement and admiration of the University Community.

Dr Akpan also used the occasion to overtly celebrate the wife of the Obong of Calabar, Queen Ansa Otu, Commissioner for Commerce, Barr Rosemary Archibong, Female Deputy Vice Chancellors, Deans and Directors whom she described as classic examples of humility, discipline, integrity and courage in the face of challenges.

The CGD Director stated that equity addresses why equal opportunities aren't enough, adding that it is a must and has to be part of every society's DNA.

The erstwhile Head of the Department of Theatre and Media Studies said that equity is not something to just think or write about but to believe in it unconditionally and support it within our sphere of influence.

She asserted that forging gender equity does not solely lie on women only and that embracing it means cherishing diversity, inclusion, harmony and unity.

.In a goodwill message at the occasion, the Director of External Relations and Partnership, Prof Peter Okafor, commended the Vice Chancellor for revamping the Directorate of Gender Development and changing the face of  Unical through academic and infrastructural achievements.

Prof Peter Okafor showered praise on the CGD Director for erasing the impression that Gender Development was all about the female gender and empowerment only and has proven that it is the participation of both genders for the development of society.

The Director of the Centre for Gender Studies, University of Uyo, Dr Uyai Akpanobong in a solidarity message called on stakeholders to embrace the principle of equity by addressing entrenched systemic imbalances that put women in disadvantaged positions.

The Commissioner of Commerce in Cross River State, Barr Rosemary Archibong said women should celebrate the achievements of their fellow women and should be given adequate  space to express themselves.

Deans of the Faculties of Arts, Prof Stella Ekpe and Physical Sciences, Prof Ayi Ayi, Director of Audit, Mr Nicholas Agbo, Former HOD of Theatre Arts, Film and Carnival Studies, Prof Emmy Idegu as well as a former Vice Chancellor, Prof James Epoke amongst many others graced the occasion.

The event was marked with a Paper presentation by Prof Uche Amalu and a performance by the Twinkle Stars.
