UNILAG Actuarial Science Programme Set For Global Accreditation

A three-man delegation from the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) and the Nigerian Actuarial Society (NAS) was received at the University of Lagos on Tuesday, September 19, 2023. They were on ground as part of the final leg of an international accreditation process for the University of Lagos’ postgraduate programme in Actuarial Science.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services), Prof. Ayodele Atsenuwa received the delegation on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor. She expressed delight at their presence, remarking that it was a sign of better things to come for the University of Lagos and her graduates.
Her words: “We are glad to have you here, because it shows that we are inching closer to meeting global standards. We are mindful of the flagship position of our Actuarial Science programme in Nigeria, and it is our determination that our curriculum and graduates are relevant and fit-for-purpose. We do not just want to award certificates. It is our desire to see the Insurance industry in Nigeria grow, with our own products leading that charge. We know your presence here today will take us there faster”.
Mr. Toby Moseley of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) commended University of Lagos for its determination to increase the international visibility of its programmes and the global competitiveness of its graduates.
“It is very commendable what you are doing here, and, at the IFoA, we stand ready to partner with you in the achievement of international visibility for your programme and the global competitiveness of your graduates”.
A Council Member of the Nigerian Actuarial Society (NAS), Mrs Yeside Kazeem, also had commendable words for the Actuarial Science programme.
“I am entirely a UNILAG Baby!”, she declared. “I had my nursery, primary, and undergraduate education here, studying Actuarial Science, and I can attest to the quality I encountered all through. On the basis of that, whenever I am out there in the West, I am able to beat my chest and proudly declare that I am a Nigerian”.
Head of Actuarial Science Department, Prof. Hamadu Dallah , was on hand to speak to the accreditation process, which he described as having been in the works for about three years. He appreciated the Management of the university for its constant support for their effort, and gave assurances of the department’s determination to live up to the belief shown in it.
Also present at the meeting were the Ag. Registrar, Mrs. Olakunle Makinde; Dean of the School of Postgraduate Studies, Prof. Abraham Osinubi; Dean of the Faculty of Management Sciences, Prof. A.A. Sulaiman; Director of the School of Foundation Studies, Prof. Solomon Akinboye; and other faculty members of the Department of Actuarial Science.
