In a display of ingenuity and forward-thinking, students from the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Lagos State University (LASU) emerged as winners of the APWEN Lagos Innovation Challenge. Miss Kehinde Adegboye, a 200-level Mechanical Engineering student from UNILAG, clinched the top spot with her project titled "Capturing of CO2 For Cooling Process," while Miss Chinaza Goodness Okpala, a 200-level Electronic and Computer Engineering student from LASU, tied for first place with her innovative idea, "The Application of Sound As A Clean Source Of Energy."

The competition, held during the APWEN Lagos Innovation Month, aimed to encourage female engineers to push boundaries and devise sustainable solutions for the future. Miss Omolola Olarenwaju, a master’s student, secured third place with her project, 'Smart Cook Stove,' showcasing the depth of talent and creativity among participating students.

The winners received certificates and plaques for their outstanding contributions. Speaking at the public lecture and mentorship program in honor of the World Creativity and Innovation Day, Mrs. Atinuke Wuraola Owolabi, Chairwoman of APWEN Lagos, emphasized the association's commitment to fostering creativity and innovation within the engineering community.

Mrs. Idiat Amusu, former president of the association and guest speaker at the event, highlighted Nigeria's need to prioritize innovation and creativity, particularly in addressing environmental challenges and climate change. She stressed the importance of sustainability and renewable energy sources, urging for greater emphasis on harnessing natural resources such as water, wind, and geothermal energy.

The event also recognized talented Nigerian children who excelled in the FAEO-WIE Art Competition 2023, showcasing their creativity and passion for engineering. As APWEN Lagos continues to champion diversity, inclusivity, and excellence in engineering, it encourages all female engineers to embrace innovation and make a lasting impact on society.
