UNILAG Engineering Alumni, Including Governor Sanwo-Olu Gather for Diamond Jubilee Celebration
UNILAG celebrated the 60th anniversary of its Faculty of Engineering with a grand reunion of alumni, including Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Ogun State Deputy Governor Engr. Mrs. Naimot Salako-Oyedele.
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) hosted an impressive reunion of its Faculty of Engineering alumni on October 3, 2024, marking the Diamond Jubilee of the faculty. Distinguished alumni, including Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Ogun State Deputy Governor, Engr. Mrs. Naimot Salako-Oyedele, FNSE, were among those who attended the 6th Public Lecture of the UNILAG Faculty of Engineering Alumni Association (UNILAGFEAA), part of the 60th-anniversary celebrations.
The Lagos State Governor, along with the Ogun State Deputy Governor, first paid a courtesy visit to Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, the Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, at the Senate House. Following the visit, they proceeded to the J.F. Ade Ajayi Auditorium, where the Public Lecture took place.
Kola Adesina, MFR, FNSE, Group Managing Director of Sahara Power Group, delivered the lecture titled The Nigerian Power Industry: Past, Present, and the Future. In his speech, Adesina highlighted the long-standing challenges in Nigeria’s power sector, focusing on the gap between population growth and infrastructural development. He stressed the need for a coherent power policy, better investment in the sector, and the promotion of renewable energy.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Chairman of the event, commended UNILAG for its role in fostering engineering talent over the past 60 years. He recalled his own time as a student in the Department of Surveying and Geo-Informatics and committed to improving infrastructure at both the Faculty of Engineering and the J.F. Ade Ajayi Auditorium.
Similarly, Ogun State Deputy Governor, Engr. Mrs. Salako-Oyedele, praised the faculty for its contributions to engineering both in Nigeria and internationally. She urged alumni and students to continue supporting the university and remain dedicated ambassadors.
UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ogunsola, reiterated the importance of aligning the faculty’s curriculum with modern engineering needs, while also calling for alumni support to upgrade its infrastructure.
The celebration concluded with the presentation of plaques and awards to key contributors to the Faculty of Engineering.
