UNILAG Hosts Alumni, Governor Sanwo-Olu, and Deputy Governor Salako-Oyedele for Faculty of Engineering Diamond Jubilee Celebration

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) welcomed alumni from its Faculty of Engineering, marking the Diamond Jubilee celebration of the faculty. The event, which included the 6th Public Lecture of the UNILAG Faculty of Engineering Alumni Association (UNILAGFEAA), attracted distinguished alumni such as Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State and the Ogun State Deputy Governor, Engr. Mrs. Naimot Salako-Oyedele, FNSE.

The celebrations kicked off with a courtesy visit by Governor Sanwo-Olu and Deputy Governor Salako-Oyedele to the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, at the Senate House. They were warmly received by the university management before proceeding to the J.F. Ade Ajayi (Main) Auditorium, the venue of the public lecture.

Delivering the keynote address, titled "The Nigerian Power Industry: Past, Present, and the Future", Mr. Kola Adesina, MFR, FNSE, Group Managing Director of Sahara Power Group, shed light on the challenges faced by Nigeria’s power sector. He emphasized the gap between population growth and infrastructural development, which has stifled the country’s progress in delivering essential services. Adesina called for a clear, well-articulated power policy that would foster investment, promote renewable energy, and stabilize exchange rates, particularly in the power sector.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, who chaired the event, congratulated UNILAG and the Faculty of Engineering on their 60-year legacy, recalling his own time as a student in the Department of Surveying and Geo-Informatics. He committed to improving infrastructure at the faculty and encouraged current students to follow the alumni's example by giving back to the university.

Deputy Governor Salako-Oyedele, an alumna of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, lauded the faculty’s contributions to Nigeria’s engineering landscape. She urged students and alumni to continue being worthy ambassadors of the institution.

In her address, Vice-Chancellor Ogunsola praised the foresight of the faculty's founders and urged alumni to support the university in addressing infrastructural challenges. She highlighted the need for curriculum updates to align with modern engineering demands.

The event concluded with awards presented to distinguished alumni for their contributions to the faculty’s growth and development. The UNILAG Faculty of Engineering, established in 1964, has played a critical role in shaping Nigeria’s engineering sector, beginning with just three departments and 38 students.
