Two students of the Faculty of Law, Joseph Olajugba (500 Level) and Joshua Adeyeye (400 Level) reverberated the UNILAG winning spirit by emerging winners of the maiden National Data Protection Moot Court Competition.

A call for participants to represent different higher institutions at the maiden edition of the National Data Protection Moot Court Competition was made in May 2022. 11 schools made it to the first phase of the 2-pronged competition.

In the first phase, participants wrote a memorial, which is a document containing written arguments about statements of facts, while the second phase entailed oral presentations of the written arguments in the same fashion obtainable in an actual court room.

8 schools scaled through to the oral phase, which was hosted by the Faculty of Law, University of Lagos (UNILAG) sponsored by Meta, between Tuesday 1st and Thursday 3rd November, 2022 along with a mini conference with the theme, “Future of Data Protection in Nigeria.”

On the first day of the oral phase, the 8 schools competed in what was called a knock out stage (quatre-finals), from which winners advanced to the semi-finals held on second day. Winners from the semi-final stage, representatives of the University of Lagos and University of Calabar then competed for first position in the final rounds of the competition on the third and final day.

After an interesting mooting session between the two finalists, Team UNILAG (Joseph Olajugba and Joshua Adeyeye) sprung forth as winners of the 1st National Data Protection Moot Court Competition, making Team UNICAL the first runner up and Team Olabisi Onabanjo University the second runner up, for having the third highest score at the semi-finals.
