UNILORIN Vice Chancellor Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, inuagurates the construction of 'Egbewole Hostel,' a 10-bedroom facility aimed at easing student accommodation issues.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, inaugurated the construction of a 10-bedroom (40 bed spaces) bungalow hostel, a significant capital project by the 36th Students’ Union leadership. The event took place last Friday, July 12, 2024.

During the ceremony, Prof. Egbewole praised the initiative, emphasizing the importance of student collaboration with the university in addressing accommodation issues. "The University of Ilorin is fortunate to have students who are proactive in solving the accommodation challenges that greatly impact the student community," he remarked.

The Vice Chancellor also commended the Student Union for their forward-thinking project, urging the Physical Planning Unit (PPU) to oversee its completion and provide professional guidance. He encouraged involving students from the Departments of Architecture, Estate Management, Building, and Quantity Surveying in the project’s supervision for valuable hands-on experience. Prof. Egbewole expressed optimism that the hostel would be ready for commissioning within a few months.

The 36th President of the Student Union, Mr. Adesunkanmi Joseph Ologundudu, announced that the hostel would be named after Prof. Wahab Egbewole, honoring his support and guidance. "This project stands out due to its scale and anticipated impact," Mr. Ologundudu said. "Our administration aims to leave a lasting legacy, and this hostel is a significant part of that vision."

He acknowledged the Vice Chancellor’s approval and support from the project's inception and expressed gratitude to the Director of Works, the Dean of Student Affairs, and the entire 36th Student Union executive team. Mr. Ologundudu assured that the incoming Student Union executive is committed to the project's completion.

Q.S. Toyin Jimoh, the Director of the Physical Planning Unit, affirmed the commitment to professional oversight to ensure the project's success. He noted that the completed hostel would enhance the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) for the Students’ Union and help alleviate the university's accommodation challenges.

The ceremony was attended by notable university officials, including Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Olubunmi Abayomi Omotesho; Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research, Technology and Innovation), Prof. Adegboyega Adisa Fawole; Registrar, Mr. Mansur Adeleke Alfanla; and Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Musa Toyin Yakubu.
