The Global Executive Committee of the University of Maiduguri Alumni Association has held separate interactive sessions with the Students’ Union Government, SUG, and the Department of Political Science as part of efforts to strengthen alumni engagement with students and academic departments.
During the meeting with the Students’ Union Government and members of the Students’ Representative Assembly, SRA, the Global President, Baba Shettima Kukawa, thanked the student leaders for the colourful and enthusiastic welcome from over 50 students who assembled to receive the delegation.
He noted that the reception reflected the strong interest of the students in building a closer and more productive relationship with the Association. He reaffirmed his commitment to mentorship, scholarships, professional development and sustainable interventions that would benefit students and leave a lasting legacy on the University.
Kukawa stated that the Association intends to draw accomplished alumni from different professions to share their experiences, mentor students and provide guidance on career choices, personal development and life after graduation. He also encouraged the SUG to participate actively in the forthcoming Annual General Conference and Award Night Dinner.
The student leaders identified mentorship and career guidance as major priorities, noting that many students require greater support in discovering their purpose and preparing for life after graduation. They also sought alumni intervention in the refurbishment of the SRA Parliament and Student Centre, improved hostel accommodation, internet connectivity and opportunities for outstanding students.
The SUG further invited the Association to support its programme scheduled for August 22, 2026, by facilitating the participation of former student leaders.
Kukawa assured the students that the issues raised would be considered and disclosed plans to bring accomplished alumni from different professions to share their experiences and mentor students.
