UNIMAID VC Charges SUG Executives on Legacy; Pledges Common Room Upgrades for World Cup
The Vice-Chancellor University of Maiduguri, Professor Mohammed Laminu Mele, has urged the newly inaugurated executives of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) to prioritize leaving a positive legacy and making a meaningful impact during their tenure.
The Vice-Chancellor gave this charge on Thursday the 12th March, 2026 during a courtesy audience with the union executives in his office at the Senate Complex.
The delegation was led and formally introduced to the Vice-Chancellor by the Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Ahmadu Brono, who noted that the meeting was essential for fostering a harmonious relationship between the management and the student body.
Congratulating the team on their election, Professor Mele noted that their victory was proof to the trust reposed to them by the students. “You are elected because they saw something in you; do not disappoint them. This position is a training ground for your future leadership roles,” he stated.
The Vice-Chancellor pledged the university’s support in refurbishing student common rooms across campus. He noted that the upgrade is strategically timed to provide a comfortable environment for students to watch the upcoming World Cup, thereby curtailing the need for students to leave the campus at night for viewing centers.
“Because of the security situation, we do not want to see students moving in and out at night. By providing these facilities on campus, we ensure your safety while you enjoy the games,” the VC explained.
Regarding the upcoming Sallah festivities, the Vice-Chancellor advised the union against organizing large, high-risk parties. He instead recommended more modest and meaningful celebrations, such as a simple "get-together," which align better with the university’s security guidelines and moral standards.
Responding to other requests in the SUG’s roadmap, the Vice-Chancellor directed the union to work closely with the University’s Works and Planning departments to ensure all infrastructure projects, including walkways and office repairs, meet the institution's master plan.
He also disclosed that a Federal Government initiative is underway to provide comprehensive internet service across the campus, advising the union to coordinate with the ICT Director to avoid a duplication of resources.
Earlier, the SUG President, Comrade Aliyu Idris, thanked the Vice-Chancellor for his "open-door policy" and pledged the union’s commitment to maintaining peace and promoting academic excellence.
