UNIMAID VTH and NAQS Join Forces to Combat Cross-Border Animal Diseases

The Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) of the University of Maiduguri and the Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service (NAQS) have announced a strategic partnership to tackle transboundary animal diseases and strengthen national biosecurity.

The collaboration was formalized on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, during a familiarization visit by the NAQS Northeast Zonal Commander to the university’s veterinary facility. The initiative is designed to enhance disease surveillance, improve pest control, and prevent the transmission of zoonotic diseases from animals to humans.

Welcoming the delegation, the Director of the VTH, Prof. M.M. Bukar, emphasized that the partnership will facilitate joint research and more robust responses to emerging health threats. He noted that the synergy would provide critical training and knowledge-exchange opportunities for veterinary professionals, leveraging UNIMAID’s global reputation for producing high-caliber experts in the field.

In his remarks, the Zonal Commander, Yusuf Sani Anka, explained that NAQS relies on such institutional alliances to regulate animal movement and monitor disease outbreaks effectively. He acknowledged the VTH as a hub for diagnosis and treatment in the Northeast, stating that closer cooperation is essential for the early detection of outbreaks and the protection of the nation’s agricultural economy.

The partnership underscores a shared commitment to safeguarding public health and driving sustainable agricultural growth across the Northeast region and beyond.
