The announcement was made after months of administrative transition at the university, which had been overseen by Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Samuel Adewumi of Lagos State University (LASU), following the expiration of the tenure of the immediate past substantive VC, Prof. Nyaudoh Ndaeyo.
According to the University Registrar, Mrs Blossom Okorie, Prof. Ekong emerged after an extensive evaluation process that included review of applications, assessment of academic and professional credentials, and interviews with shortlisted candidates.
She stated that the Council unanimously approved his appointment as the 9th substantive Vice-Chancellor of the university, with effect from June 16, 2026.

Mrs Okorie explained that the selection process adhered strictly to established legal frameworks and governance guidelines, ensuring fairness, merit, and institutional integrity.
“The new VC emerged as the most suitable candidate, having demonstrated outstanding academic excellence, administrative competence, visionary leadership, and a strong commitment to the advancement of the university,” she said.
Prof. Ekong is a distinguished scholar in Economics with a strong background in teaching, research, and academic administration. Prior to his appointment, he served as Chairman of the Committee of Deans, where he contributed significantly to institutional development and governance.
