University of Ibadan (UI) Vice-Chancellor Seeks Strengthened Security Collaboration with Oyo State Chiefs
Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan (UI), Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, mni, fspsp, FAS, has called for enhanced cooperation from security chiefs in Oyo State to address the growing security challenges affecting the institution and society.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan (UI), Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, mni, fspsp, FAS, has called for enhanced cooperation from security chiefs in Oyo State to address the growing security challenges affecting the institution and society. In a series of courtesy visits, Professor Adebowale and his team met with key security leaders, including the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Mechanised Division of the Nigerian Army, the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, and the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Professor Adebowale highlighted the complex and multifaceted nature of the current security issues facing the nation, stressing that a united, multi-dimensional approach is necessary to combat these challenges. He underscored the importance of a strong partnership between the academic community and security forces to ensure law and order, particularly among young people. The Vice-Chancellor also expressed gratitude for the support UI has previously received from security agencies during both peaceful times and periods of unrest on campus.
In response, General OG Onubogu, the GOC of the 2 Mechanised Division, commended Professor Adebowale for reaching out and emphasized the Army’s commitment to working closely with other security agencies to maintain peace and stability in Oyo State. He noted that peace is the ultimate measure of success for security personnel.
Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ayodele Sonubi, also expressed appreciation for the academic opportunities UI has extended to members of the police force, which has helped many of them further their education. He assured that the positive relationship between UI and the Nigerian Police Force would continue.
Additionally, the DSS Director, Mr. Rasheed Adeyinka Adelakun, fsi, fspsp, pledged that the organization would go beyond its previous efforts to support UI in light of Professor Adebowale’s request for increased assistance. He highlighted the DSS’s recognition of academia’s critical role in national development and assured that covert operations on university campuses would be intensified to ensure safety.
Professor Adebowale was joined on the courtesy visits by a team from UI, including the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Peter O. Olapegba, fspsp, FNPA; the Registrar, Mr. Ganiyu O. Saliu, fspsp; Dr. Benjamin A. Aluko, Director of the TETFund Centre of Excellence in Multidisciplinary Studies; Deputy Registrar and Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Adejoke O. Akinpelu; Acting Chief Safety Officer, Mr. Lasisi Oyekanmi; and Principal Assistant Registrar in the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, Mr. Tilewa Adeniji.
The visits underscored UI’s proactive approach to campus security and commitment to fostering stronger partnerships with Oyo State's security institutions for the safety and well-being of the academic community and society at large.
