The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilesa, Professor Taiwo Asaolu, has urged staff to improve their digital skills to stay relevant in a technology-driven world.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilesa, Osun State, Professor Taiwo Asaolu, has emphasized the necessity for staff to enhance their digital skills, warning that failure to do so could leave them behind in today’s technology-driven world. Prof. Asaolu made this statement during the 2024 Advanced Digital Empowerment Programme for Tertiary Institutions (ADEPTI), which commenced on Monday at the university's premises.

Highlighting the growing importance of technology in daily operations, Prof. Asaolu noted that digital proficiency is essential for both academic and administrative staff to remain relevant and productive. "The world is now primarily driven by technology and innovations," he stated, "and it is imperative that all staff, whether academic or non-teaching, are digitally competent."

The ADEPTI training, sponsored by the Digital Bridge Institute (DBI), is designed to align with the university’s commitment to integrating cutting-edge technology into teaching, learning, and administrative activities. Prof. Asaolu explained that the program focuses on enhancing participants' skills in data analysis, digital skills, cybersecurity, and the use of emerging technologies, with specific training on software such as SPSS and Microsoft Power BI.

The Vice-Chancellor shared several measures already undertaken to modernize the institution. He revealed that the university management has equipped all faculties with smart boards and provided training on their effective use. Additionally, the governing council recently approved the implementation of new accounting software for the Bursary Department, with all staff set to receive training to ensure efficient usage.

Prof. Asaolu also announced plans to digitize other service departments, including the Registry and Internal Audit, to increase operational efficiency and promote a paperless system across the university. "The ultimate aim is to digitize operations towards timely service delivery and increased efficiency," he noted.

Underscoring the role of digital competence in global and national university rankings, Prof. Asaolu highlighted how digital visibility can boost the institution's reputation, education quality, and research output. He cautioned that the university must not be left behind, emphasizing that embracing digital transformation is crucial for advancing the institution’s standing.

"The Digital Bridge Institute’s ADEPTI workshop aligns perfectly with our vision," he remarked. "We appreciate this strategic partnership, and we anticipate more interventions from DBI and its parent body, the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC)."

As the training program commenced, Prof. Asaolu urged participants to fully engage with the program, emphasizing the importance of the skills and knowledge to be gained. "Please take this training seriously," he advised, expressing confidence in the resource persons’ expertise to inspire innovative approaches to technology integration.

The Vice-Chancellor concluded by formally declaring the program open, reiterating the administration’s full support for the initiative and appreciation for DBI's sponsorship. The training program is expected to enhance digital competence across the university, equipping staff with skills critical for adapting to rapid technological changes in the academic environment.
