In a commendable community service initiative, the Department of Geography at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has successfully trained twenty-five women from Oworonshoki, a suburb in Lagos State, in urban farming techniques. The outreach, conducted in collaboration with Fabulous Urban Nigeria Foundation, culminated in a two-day organic farming workshop held on Friday, August 16, and Saturday, August 17, 2024.
The workshop provided hands-on training in various aspects of urban organic farming, covering topics such as:
- Introduction to Urban Organic Crop Cultivation
- Organic Farming Methods
- Seed Selection and Land Preparation
- Planting Techniques for crops like tomatoes, peppers, sweet potatoes, spring onions, and traditional vegetables like Shoko, Tete, and Ewedu
- Soil Management and Fertility Improvement
- Pest and Disease Control
- Crop Management Techniques
- Harvesting and Post-Harvest Handling
Participants expressed their gratitude and shared positive feedback about the training. One participant remarked, “This is the first time in my life engaging in farming activities. I used to buy vegetables from the market but didn’t know how they were cultivated. I never knew about seed testing; I just used to plant and accept the outcome, but with this knowledge, I will always engage in seed testing with clean water to know its viability. I hope to use the available space in my compound to apply the knowledge gained from this training to produce my own fresh and nutritious vegetables.”
The participants extended their thanks to the Department of Geography, UNILAG, particularly the Farm Coordinator, Dr. Vide Adedayo; the Director of Projects at Fabulous Urban Nigeria Foundation, Mr. Ismail Aro; and the Farm Assistant, Mr. Isa Shehu, for their relentless efforts during the training.
This initiative underscores UNILAG’s commitment to fostering Town-Gown cooperation and represents a significant step towards empowering local communities through sustainable practices.
