University of Maiduguri Marks International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction

The University of Maiduguri has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing research, training, and community engagement in disaster risk management. This was highlighted by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mohammed Laminu Mele, during the commemoration of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) at the Muhammad Indimi International Conference Centre today.
Represented by the University Librarian, Prof. Aliyu Yahaya, the Vice-Chancellor emphasized the institution’s efforts in addressing disaster challenges in the northeast, particularly those posed by floods, droughts, conflicts, and displacement. He highlighted the significance of this year’s IDDRR theme, “Fighting Inequality for a Resilient Future,” noting how disasters often worsen inequalities, especially for vulnerable groups like children.
Prof. Mele commended the partnership with Save the Children International, whose work in protecting children aligns with the University’s mission of building resilient communities. He also referenced the recent floods in Maiduguri, underscoring the need for strengthened disaster preparedness and response.
In his remarks, Save the Children International representative, Mr. Ihenchi Nwari, praised the University for its ongoing support and mentorship, calling for continued collaboration between the two institutions.
