The University of Port Harcourt has firmly rejected claims that it imposes a clearance fee of N649,400 on its final-year students.
The University of Port Harcourt has firmly rejected claims that it imposes a clearance fee of N649,400 on its final-year students. The university has labeled the report, which was disseminated by an online media outlet, as entirely false and misleading.
Dr. Sam Kpenu, the Head of Information, Publications, and Public Relations at UNIPORT, issued a statement addressing these claims. The statement, titled “Clarification on Clearance Fees for Final-Year Students,” was released in Port Harcourt on Wednesday and distributed to journalists.
Dr. Kpenu emphasized that UNIPORT maintains some of the lowest tuition fees among federal universities in Nigeria. He also highlighted the university’s commitment to supporting students through scholarships for those experiencing financial difficulties. Additionally, the university extends payment deadlines to allow students sufficient time to manage their finances. He specifically refuted the existence of any ‘medical clearance’ or ‘admissibility fees’ as suggested in the report.
“The University of Port Harcourt has been made aware of an inaccurate report by Sahara Reporters claiming that final-year students are required to pay N649,400 as a clearance fee,” the statement reads. “We categorically state that this information is entirely false.”
UNIPORT remains dedicated to providing affordable and accessible education. The institution's fees are among the lowest compared to other federal universities in Nigeria. The university also offers a range of scholarships to aid students facing financial hardships.
“We encourage students and the public to refer only to official communications from the University of Port Harcourt for accurate information about fees and financial matters,” Dr. Kpenu added. “The claims made by Sahara Reporters are completely false and misleading. We urge the media to verify their information before publishing.”
