In a groundbreaking achievement, a young African woman named Janice Darkoo has etched her name in history as the University of Utah’s first black graduate from its School of Dentistry. Originally from Ghana, Janice Darkoo shattered barriers by becoming the inaugural black recipient of this prestigious degree since the school's establishment a decade ago.

Janice Darkoo, an African immigrant, emphasized that upon gaining acceptance into the Dental program, she was determined to leave a lasting mark on the university. Despite juggling multiple responsibilities as a wife, mother, and member of the United States Navy Reserve, she remained undeterred in her pursuit of academic excellence.

"I am honored to have my name inscribed in the annals of this institution's history as the first black woman to graduate from the University of Utah’s dental school," Janice remarked, highlighting the significance of her accomplishment beyond personal accolades. She attributed her success to the unwavering support of her family and community.

Throughout her tenure at the university, Janice championed diversity and inclusion initiatives by founding the Black and Art Dental Student Association (BDSA). Under her leadership, the association curated an art exhibition celebrating cultural diversity within the dental school, showcasing her Ghanaian heritage and fostering a supportive environment for students and faculty alike.

In recognition of her exceptional contributions, Janice was awarded the prestigious Minijean Brown Award of Virtue during the Black Faculty and Staff Awards Ceremony. This accolade recognizes students who have positively impacted the University of Utah community.
