To enhance the safety and well-being of students, the House of Representatives of the Students' Union Government (SUG) at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, has passed a bill aimed at regulating the products sold during night and day events on campus. The bill, titled "A Bill to Regulate Products Sold in Night and Day Events and Their Prices," was meticulously considered and deliberated upon by the SUG representatives.

The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Okeke Charles Chibuike, emphasized the necessity of this regulation in a statement, highlighting the bill's objectives to ensure student safety and affordability. "This bill is a proactive step towards safeguarding our students from the dangers of illicit substances and exploitation through exorbitant pricing at campus events," he stated.

Key provisions of the bill include:

1. Vetting Process for Vendors: A vetting process will be established for vendors participating in any event on campus, ensuring they meet specified standards set forth by the Office of the Director of Welfare and the HOR Committee on Welfare.

2. Price Regulation: Enforcement of regulations to prevent vendors from arbitrarily increasing prices of goods during night parties, thus safeguarding students from exploitation and ensuring the affordability of essential items.

3. Strict Monitoring: Strict monitoring and control measures will be implemented to prevent the sale of spurious/illicit substances and intoxicating beverages to students during events, thereby mitigating the risk of students engaging in illegal activities under the influence.

Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Okeke Mary Chidinma, and other key officials, including Deputy Clerk Hon. Celestine Ada Beatrice and Sergeant at Arms Hon. Aneke Chimdindu Samuel, have expressed their support for the bill, reiterating its importance for student welfare.

The SUG has pledged to collaborate with the welfare officer and other relevant stakeholders to ensure the effective enforcement and implementation of the proposed regulation. This collective effort aims to foster a safe and conducive environment for all students within the university community.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Charles Arinzechukwu Igwe, praised the initiative, stating, "This is a commendable effort by our student leaders to prioritize the safety and well-being of their peers.
