Uzuakoli Methodist College Celebrates 100 Years of Secondary Education in South-East Nigeria

The Uzuakoli Methodist College Old Boys Association (UMCOBA) has announced a celebration to mark 100 years of secondary education in the South-East of Nigeria. The announcement was made by the National President of UMCOBA, Mr. Ugochukwu Okoroafor, during a press conference in Umuahia.

Okoroafor stated that the first secondary school in the region, which began as an experiment, has been a resounding success. He expressed pride in the school’s history and optimism for the future, saying, “We are very proud of our antecedents and we are hopeful that the next century will bring even more blessings and glory to our society through the activities of the products of Methodist College Uzuakoli.”

The Methodist Church launched the ambitious mission of establishing a secondary school in 1923, marking the beginning of secondary school education in the South-East of Nigeria. The school, initially named Uzuakoli Institute, was later renamed Methodist College Uzuakoli.

Okoroafor, accompanied by the Archbishop of Umuahia Archdiocese, Dr. Raphael Opoko, and other old boys of UMECO, explained that the Methodist Church aimed to use ‘Christian education’ to expand its reach in Eastern Nigeria and foster development following the devastation of the First World War and the Anglo-Arochukwu War.

The College has produced many notable alumni, including the late premier of the defunct Eastern Region, Dr. Michael Okpara, Justice Udo Udoma, Mr. Edwin Ogbu, and a former governor of CBN, Mr. Clement Isong, among others.

Archbishop Opoko noted the impeccable record of the College’s alumni, stating that none of them has been indicted for wrongdoing by any court of law in the 100 years of the College’s existence. He added that the products of UMECO have always strived to leave a legacy of honour and honesty in both the public and private sectors.
