Despite the strike, construction work at the high-level underpasses continued, and drinking joints, such as Shaka at Kenville Park, remained open with patrons enjoying cow tail pepper soup and alcohol. Essential services like journalism, nursing, and nursery schools were still operational.
NLC Chairperson Comrade Terungwa Igbe and TUC Chairperson Comrade Gideon Akaa issued a statement attributing the strike to the government's failure to agree on a new national minimum wage and reverse the hike in electricity tariffs. They emphasized that all affiliated unions in Benue must comply with the strike directives until further notice.
