Violence Erupts: Father Allegedly Attacks Teacher at Abuja School

A crisis broke out at Aces Nursery Primary and Secondary School in Abuja when Muhammed Jimeta, a father, assaulted teacher Sekinat Adedeji, alleging she had beaten his daughter, Karima Jimeta. In her account of the incident, the teacher, Sekinat Adedeji, revealed that she was cradling her three-month-old infant when she was assaulted by her student’s father, Jimeta.

A crisis broke out at Aces Nursery Primary and Secondary School in Abuja when Muhammed Jimeta, a father, assaulted teacher Sekinat Adedeji, alleging she had beaten his daughter, Karima Jimeta. The incident reprtedly transpired on Tuesday, May 28.

In her account of the incident, the teacher, Sekinat Adedeji, revealed that she was cradling her three-month-old infant when she was assaulted by her student’s father, Jimeta. 

She explained that she teaches the female student, Karima Jimeta, in basic three. She narrated, “The incident occurred around 12:30 pm on May 29, 2024, when I used a ruler on her leg because she and others were causing a disturbance and were asked to kneel. She insulted me with ‘wanka’, which led me to discipline her on the leg with a small ruler.”

The term “uwarka” in Hausa, which translates to ‘Your Mother’, is an offensive gesture made by extending one’s five fingers towards someone.

Adedeji further explained, “The father slapped me four times around 4 pm, an hour after school ended at 3 pm. His daughter informed him of the earlier incident at 12.30 pm when he arrived to pick her up after school. The child lacks seriousness in her studies and often disrespects the teachers who come to the class.”

A parent who witnessed the incident, Magdalene Ukuedojor, alleged that the female pupil has a habit of insulting everyone, stressing that the father had no justification to lay hands on a nursing mother and teacher of his child. She said, “The teacher has a three-month-old baby, yet this man beat her up while she was carrying this baby in front of little children, “Teachers were even begging, they knelt begging but he still charged at her. She had to run and leave the class". ‘It was when I came to pick up my son that I saw her outside, her face was already swollen", she added.

She added that the child is disrespectful and the angry parent could have reported it to the school authorities rather than beat the teacher up. 

When asked, the Angry parent, Jimeta claimed that the teacher had been abusing his child for weeks. He stated, “This woman has been punishing that child for a long time. The last time she disciplined her, I spoke to the school management and they pacified me. But she was yelling at me and I didn’t respond to her. After two days, she disciplined the child again and sent her home to inform us that she had done so and dared us to react as we pleased. If you could see the marks and the blood on her legs. She drove me to madness.”
