The Women Medical Doctors Association of Nigeria (WMDAN), Borno State Chapel, has approached the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) to establish a collaborative partnership aimed at enhancing medical education and healthcare delivery, with a particular focus on women.

During a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mohammed Laminu Mele, at the Muhammadu Buhari Senate Building on Monday, 9th February 2026, Professor Mele highlighted multiple areas for potential collaboration, including the promotion of quality medical training and increasing the number of female medical practitioners in the region.
Professor Mele emphasized the importance of identifying female medical talents early—potentially even at the secondary school level—based on passion and interest rather than financial capacity. He further noted the need to support children from less privileged backgrounds who demonstrate potential but lack opportunities, stressing that WMDAN could play a key role in bridging gaps in health education, particularly regarding hygiene and wellness for female students in university hostels.
He thanked the association for their visit and reaffirmed the university’s readiness to support initiatives that advance medical training and healthcare outcomes.

Speaking earlier, Dr. Rukaiya Buba Iman, leader of the WMDAN Borno State Chapel, expressed gratitude for the warm reception and support. She explained that the visit aimed to familiarize the association with the university’s management and strengthen institutional ties. Dr. Iman highlighted WMDAN’s interest in exploring collaborative opportunities in maternal and child health, especially within the North-East region, and expressed optimism about the potential impact of a formal partnership with UNIMAID.
