Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) has joined forces with the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) to embark on an ambitious initiative aimed at empowering one million girls across Nigeria through skills training programs. This collaboration, under UNICEF’s Girls’ Education Skills and Partnership (GESP) project, seeks to equip adolescent girls and young women with essential skills to enhance their employability and entrepreneurial capabilities.

Dr. Engr. Ibraheem Abdul, the Rector of YABATECH, announced this groundbreaking initiative during the opening ceremony of a five-day course design workshop held at the college. The workshop, sponsored by UNICEF and the Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), gathered over sixty participants to strategize on how to effectively implement the GESP project.

Emphasizing the importance of ICT skills in today's digital landscape, Dr. Abdul highlighted YABATECH's commitment to providing its students with the necessary tools for success. He underscored the significance of the project in addressing the gender gap and empowering women for a sustainable future.

The workshop aims to utilize a pedagogical approach, combining online learning with practical workplace experience to deliver high-quality training to the participants. Dr. Abdul urged the attendees to actively engage in the workshop to acquire the required skills and templates for the project's success.

The Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Prof. Idris Bugaje, commended YABATECH for its dedication to skills development in Nigeria. He emphasized the importance of initiatives like GESP in equipping young people with market-relevant skills and contributing to national development.

Dr. Funmilayo Doherty, the project coordinator, expressed gratitude to UNICEF and FCDO for their support in making the workshop possible. She highlighted the workshop's focus on gender-responsive pedagogy, ensuring inclusivity and relevance in the learning design template.

The workshop will cover a range of courses, including resources for GSM and Mobile Phone Repairs, Computer Hardware Maintenance and Repairs, Mobile Applications Development, and Web Application Development. By providing girls with access to these market-relevant skills, YABATECH and UNICEF aim to empower them to thrive in the digital economy and contribute meaningfully to society.
