In a groundbreaking achievement, Tobechukwu Tobi Phillips, an exceptional African-American girl from Nigeria, has etched her name in the annals of Alvin High School's 125-year history as the first-ever black valedictorian. Tobechukwu's remarkable accomplishment is underscored by her outstanding 6.9 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale, securing her position at the pinnacle of her graduating class.

Out of 2,800 students, Tobechukwu is one of only 86 black students, making her journey even more extraordinary. Throughout her four-year study, she maintained A's in all her courses, emphasizing the challenges of sustaining the highest GPA: "Maintaining the highest GPA in my class is a difficult task. It truly takes time management but more importantly acknowledging what you do it for. I know that I am no longer just representing myself," she shared.

Beyond her academic excellence, Tobechukwu is actively engaged in extracurricular activities. She plays volleyball, participates in track, serves as a Sunday School teacher at her church, and holds leadership roles as the president of the National Honor Society, a member of the Rho Kappa Honor Society, and an AP ambassador.

Tobechukwu's accomplishments extend further as one of the 16 students selected from 4,000 applicants to receive a Full-Ride Forty Acre Scholarship to attend the University of Texas at Austin, United States. With aspirations to own her clinic as a pediatric nurse practitioner, Tobechukwu will pursue her nursing education at UT Austin's Nursing School.

While celebrating her success, Tobechukwu offers valuable advice to fellow scholars of color, encouraging them to adopt the mindset of Rosa Parks, stating, "Do not conform to the stereotypes that have held us under thumbs for so long. Do not be discouraged when someone speaks out against you, simply allow what they say to fuel your fire. But more than anything, do not remain tight-lipped. Stand up for what you believe in and take it upon yourself to be the change you’ve always wanted."
