A 14-year-old prime suspect, Joy Afekafe, has been remanded by a Chief Magistrate Court in Minna, Niger State, over the murder of Mrs. Funmilola Sherifat Adefolalu, an Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna.

The Nigerian Police, Niger State Command, brought three charges against Afekafe, including criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, and armed robbery, under sections 97, 221, and 298 of the penal code law.

The prosecution, led by DSP Ahmed Saidu, informed Chief Magistrate Fati Hassan Umar that two other suspects, Wallex and Smart, are still at large. The court heard that the trio invaded the residence of the deceased on October 28, 2023, where they fatally attacked her, causing her death.

The prosecutor detailed the gruesome incident, stating that Afekafe used a knife from the kitchen to stab the victim multiple times and also assaulted her with a wooden stool. The assailants reportedly stole $3000, a laptop computer, a mobile phone, two power banks, and a car battery.

Mrs. Adefolalu was subsequently taken to the IBB Specialist Hospital, where she was confirmed dead by medical doctors.

Joy Afekafe pleaded not guilty to the charges, and the prosecution requested her remand in the Correctional Centre. Chief Magistrate Fati Hassan Umar granted the request, directing that Afekafe be remanded at the Children Correctional Centre. The case is adjourned to December 11, 2023, for further mention.
