18 Kenyan Students Set to Compete in Huawei ICT Competition Global Final in China
Eighteen Kenyan University students are set to depart for China to participate in the Huawei ICT Competition Global Final. The Huawei ICT Competition, which began in 2015, is a collaborative effort under the Huawei ICT Academy. This initiative partners with more than 50 tertiary education institutes to enrich the ICT talent pool and foster industry growth.
Eighteen Kenyan University students are set to depart for China to participate in the Huawei ICT Competition Global Final. The competition garnered interest from over 120,000 students across 2,000 universities and colleges in 74 countries and regions worldwide and at the global final, six teams will compete in the Cloud, Computing, and Network tracks.
The Huawei ICT Competition, which began in 2015, is a collaborative effort under the Huawei ICT Academy. This initiative partners with more than 50 tertiary education institutes to enrich the ICT talent pool, foster industry growth, and contribute to the “LEAP” talent ecosystem development program in sub-Saharan Africa. Huawei aims to cultivate over 100,000 ICT talents for the region within three years.

Hon. Moses Wetangula, Speaker of the National Assembly, Kenya, praised Huawei’s advanced technology and innovation across Africa. He recalled his visit to Huawei Headquarters in China during his tenure as Foreign Affairs Minister, where he was impressed by the technology and work at the Huawei Campus.
In Kenya, Huawei has established ICT Academies in over 50 universities and vocational colleges. These academies provide training in networking, cloud, 5G, and AI, benefiting more than 4,000 students annually. Additionally, the Huawei ICT Skills Competition attracts over 6,000 Kenyan students each year, offering a platform for competition, knowledge exchange, and skill enhancement.

Mr. Gavin Gao, CEO of Huawei emphasized Huawei’s commitment to building Kenyan youth talent. He highlighted the importance of talent ecosystems for industry vitality and growth. Huawei collaborates with educational institutions, industry associations, and partners to foster an ICT talent ecosystem.
"Through digital skills training and encouraging student participation in skills competitions, the LEAP program aims to improve digital skills among young people in the region, addressing the growing demand for digital talent in business and society", he added.
