2023 NECO Results: Best and Worst Performances by States

On Tuesday, October 10, 2023, the National Examination Council (NECO) released the results of the 2023 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE). In an official statement, Professor Dantani Wushishi, the Registrar of NECO, shared that 61.6 percent of the candidates achieved at least five credits, including Mathematics and English.
NECO, a prominent examination body in Nigeria, conducts the SSCE and General Certificate (GCE) exams in June/July and November/December each year. The inaugural SSCE took place in mid-2000.The 2023 SSCE was held from Monday, July 10, to Friday, August 11, 2023, with the subsequent marking period spanning from Wednesday, August 30, to Friday, September 15, 2023.

1. Abia State (Top Performer):

2. Adamawa State (Second Best):
Adamawa State, situated in the North-East geopolitical zone of Nigeria, boasts numerous secondary and primary schools, technical colleges, and private institutions. In 2023, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri allocated N1 billion to cover the fees for NECO, West African Examination Council (WAEC), and other examinations, demonstrating the state's commitment to improving education.

State with the Lowest Performing Candidates: Kebbi State
Kebbi State, located in northwest Nigeria, is the tenth largest in terms of area among Nigeria's 36 states and the 22nd most populous with an estimated population of about 4.4 million as of 2016. In a previous report, NECO revealed that 93 schools were involved in mass cheating during the 2023 SSCE, with 52 supervisors facing blacklisting due to poor supervision and aiding and abetting during the examinations. Students and parents experienced anxiety due to the delayed release of the June/July 2023 SSCE results, as many SS3 students had taken the 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) with pending results. Some students who had sat for the May/June 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) had pinned their hopes on the NECO results.
