A total of 59 graduating students from the Department of History and International Studies, University of Delta, Agbor, were inducted into the Historical Society of Nigeria (HSN) on Thursday, 21st August 2025.

During the ceremony, Prof. Nwachukwu Obiakor, HSN Vice President for South East, emphasized that the induction promotes academic excellence, professional development, historical awareness, career guidance, community engagement, and personal growth.

In her opening remarks, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Stella Chiemeke described the induction as a rite of passage that affirms the role of history in shaping the future. She noted that history is more than a record of the past—it is a mirror through which people understand their identity and chart tomorrow. Prof. Chiemeke lauded the students as custodians of values, culture, and truth, reminding them of their responsibility to carry the torch of knowledge into society.

The Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Dr. Carol Ohen, thanked university management for supporting the event and urged students to remain focused and become great ambassadors of UNIDEL. Dr. Amaechi Ehimatie, Head of the Department, highlighted that the induction provides an opportunity to reflect on students’ academic journey and future prospects, while equipping them with essential professional skills. He revealed that many students would graduate with outstanding grades and emphasized the Department’s commitment to cutting-edge research and academic innovation.

The induction lecture, titled “Relevance Redefined: Exploring Career Opportunities for History Graduates in Today's Competitive Environment,” was delivered by Prof. Edward Erhagbe, Director of Advancement and Alumni Relations, University of Benin. He discussed the importance of education, youth empowerment, and career development, while examining the challenges faced by History and International Studies graduates in contemporary Nigeria.

During a courtesy visit, Prof. Obiakor praised Prof. Chiemeke for her leadership and Dr. Ehimatie for initiating the induction ceremony. The Department also presented awards to notable individuals, including Prof. Stella Chiemeke (Foundational Leader and Academic Visionary), Prof. Patricia Mbah (Pillar of Educational Advancement), Barr. Richmond Omagbemi (Doyen of Administrative Excellence), Mr. Sunny Ikeogwu (Icon of Excellent Financial Management), Dr. (Mrs.) Vera Okonoko (Initiator of Digital Library), Hon. Festus Chukwuyem Okoh (Icon of Impactful Legislative Activities and Youth Empowerment), Dr. Donald Peterson (Upholder of Digital Literacy), and Dr. F. A Onyekpeze (Pathfinder of Ika Historiography).

Responding on behalf of the awardees, Dr. Donald Peterson expressed gratitude and donated ₦1 million to support the Department.

The event, attended by dignitaries, including representatives of the Delta State House of Assembly, Deans, Heads of Departments, and other guests, culminated with the presentation of induction certificates to the students, marking a memorable milestone in their academic journey.
