70 Universities Conclude FASU Games in Lagos

The 11th Federation of African University Sports (FASU) Games concluded in Lagos, with 70 universities from across Africa participating. Co-hosted by the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Lagos State University (LASU), the American University in Cairo emerged as the overall winner, followed by LASU in second place and UNILAG in third.

70 Universities Conclude FASU Games in Lagos

The 11th edition of the Federation of African University Sports (FASU) Games successfully concluded in Lagos on Sunday, bringing together 70 universities from across Africa. The nine-day sporting event was co-hosted by the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Lagos State University (LASU), marking a significant moment in African university sports.

The American University in Cairo took first place in the competition, followed by LASU in second place, and UNILAG in third. Other notable participants included the University of Ghana, which placed fourth, and the University of Development Studies, securing the fifth spot.

The Secretary-General of FASU, Peninnah Aligawesa, passed the ceremonial torch to the vice-chancellors of LASU and UNILAG, who then presented it to the American University in Cairo, the next host of the games.

The closing ceremony, held at LASU Sports Complex, was graced by the Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, who commended the 834 athletes—590 males and 244 females—who competed in 17 different sports disciplines. Accompanied by 185 institutional officials, the athletes demonstrated exceptional talent throughout the event.

“I am proud of all the students who participated and won various medals,” said Prof. Ogunsola. She further highlighted that Team UNILAG secured a total of 98 medals, lauding the athletes for embodying hope and inspiration.

The Vice-Chancellor emphasized that sports played a pivotal role in fostering unity and development, stating, "As you return to your universities, carry with you the lessons learned and the bonds forged here. At UNILAG, we are committed to promoting sports as a tool for development, fostering education, and building a brighter future for our youths."

Similarly, the Vice-Chancellor of LASU, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, expressed pride in LASU’s role in hosting the games. She highlighted how the event served as a platform for building friendships and alliances across nations, reinforcing sports as a tool for African unity.

“Together with UNILAG, we have given Lagos and Nigeria a worthy representation,” said Olatunji-Bello, adding that LASU looked forward to hosting future editions of the FASU Games.
