Abia State Commissioner Uncovers Illegal Conversion of Government Schools into Markets and Event Centres
Abia's Commissioner for Education, Professor Uche Eme Uche, reveals that nearly 300 government schools in Abia State were taken over by individuals and faith-based organizations, with some being converted into relief markets and social event centres.
Abia State Commissioner for Education, Professor Uche Eme Uche, revealed that nearly 300 government schools in Abia State have been allegedly taken over by individuals and faith-based organizations, with some schools being converted into relief markets and social event centres.
Professor Uche presented these findings to the Abia State Judiciary Panel of Inquiry on the recovery of government properties and funds in Umuahia. She made the discovery upon assuming office as Commissioner for Education.
The Commissioner stated that her investigation began when she received a report that Comprehensive Secondary School, Okpu-Umuobo in Osisioma Ngwa LGA, had been taken over by an individual claiming that the immediate past governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, had approved its use for a National Agricultural Land Development Agency (NALDA) project. However, efforts to trace the documents related to this alleged handover proved futile.
According to Uche, when she visited the school with the General Manager of Greater Aba Development Agency, armed security personnel stationed at the school allegedly fired a gunshot at them. This prompted them to seek refuge in a nearby Eze's Palace until they were rescued by police officers from the nearest police station.

Due to the security risks and uncertainty surrounding the use of the school, Uche was forced to secure an alternative location at Obuwa Community School for the students. She reported the matter to Governor Alex Otti for further investigation.

In addition to revealing the irregularities in the administration of government schools, the Commissioner urged the Panel to investigate the activities of the Examination Development Center in Umuahia, suggesting that these misappropriations might extend beyond school properties.
The revelations have caused significant concern among residents and stakeholders in Abia State, as they indicate a possible misuse of public resources and property. Governor Alex Otti's administration is expected to address these issues to ensure the protection and appropriate use of government properties in Abia State.
