Ahead of the September 16 resumption date, the Abia State government has started deploying security personnel to select public schools to protect pupils, students, staff, and property. This was announced by the Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, during a press briefing following the Executive Committee meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
Kanu stated that this move fulfills an earlier promise to secure the lives and property of pupils, students, teachers, and school assets. He emphasized that this initiative is part of the government’s broader agenda to provide seamless education and reform the education sector.
Additionally, Kanu announced that 5,746 teachers have been earmarked for promotion, with 200 out of 2,000 already trained and scheduled for master trainer program training. Under the Abia State School Enhancement Team program, the state’s Universal Basic Education Board has screened 40 teachers to ensure quality assurance and adherence to school guidelines.
The government has also set up a panel of experts to oversee the upgrade of the School of Nursing, Amachara, to a College of Nursing Sciences. Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Kenechukwu Nwosu, stated that the government is mapping out schools to determine their security needs and address them accordingly.
