Abia State University Extends Teaching Time: A Commitment to Academic Excellence

In a move aimed at enhancing the quality of education and ensuring that students receive the best possible learning experience, Abia State University (ABSU) has extended its teaching time by four weeks. This decision was reached during the 265th Regular Meeting of the Senate, held on Wednesday, August 30, 2023. The extension of the lecture period is a proactive measure to allow academic staff ample time to cover their syllabi for the semester comprehensively. The directive for this extension came from the Directorate of the Centre for Quality Assurance and Ethics (CQAE), reflecting ABSU's commitment to upholding high standards of education. It acknowledges that some staff may require additional time to effectively cover their course materials and ensure that students receive a thorough understanding of the subject matter.

In light of this extension, a memo issued by Prof. E.I. Akubugwo, the Director of CQAE, emphasizes the importance of academic staff making the most of this opportunity. It is a call to action for educators to utilize this extra time effectively to benefit both students and the institution. The Centre for Quality Assurance and Ethics (CQAE) will actively monitor the teaching process during this extended period. Their role is crucial in ensuring that the teaching standards remain high and that students receive a quality education. Deans and Heads of Departments (HODs) have also been tasked with providing weekly updates on the progress of teaching within their respective Faculties and Departments. This reporting mechanism will help track the effective utilization of the extended lecture period.

However, this extension of the teaching period at Abia State University demonstrates the institution's unwavering commitment to academic excellence and the holistic development of its students. It acknowledges that education is not about rushing through syllabi but about providing students with a deep and meaningful understanding of their subjects. With the active involvement of the Centre for Quality Assurance and Ethics and the dedication of academic staff, ABSU is well on its way to becoming the Center of Excellence it aspires to be. The entire university community is encouraged to work together to make this vision a reality, and in doing so, they contribute to the bright future of the institution and its students.
