NAPRI Announces Ambitious 2026 Beef Production Target; Plans 400% Increase in Cattle Processing
The National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI) at Ahmadu Bello University has unveiled a transformative expansion of its beef research programme, targeting the slaughter and processing of 500 cattle in 2026.
This initiative marks a significant leap from the 2025 output of approximately 120 cattle, representing an increase of over 400 percent. The project is designed to bolster food security, provide affordable protein to the university and its host communities, and translate livestock research into tangible socio-economic benefits.
The 2026 beef production cycle has officially commenced this January and is scheduled to run continuously throughout the year. Dr. Tanko highlighted that the initiative directly advances NAPRI’s mandate to address real-world challenges through scientific excellence and innovation.
"Our work is guided by a simple but powerful commitment: to provide safe, wholesome, and high-quality animal protein to our communities," Dr. Tanko stated. By delivering reliable and nutritious products, the programme aims to promote public confidence in meat safety while strengthening the local economy.
