ADSU Moves Closer to Medical College as NUC Conducts Resource Verification

The Vice-Chancellor of Adamawa State University, Mubi Professor Augustine Clement, on Tuesday, 8th April 2026, received a delegation from the National Universities Commission (NUC) for a resource verification exercise ahead of the proposed launch of its Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), and Bachelor of Nursing programmes.

The visit focused on a comprehensive assessment aimed at evaluating the university’s readiness in terms of infrastructure, manpower, and academic facilities. It also sought to identify any gaps and provide professional guidance to ensure the institution meets all required standards before final approval is granted.

The ambition to establish a medical college at the university dates back to its founding in 2002. However, the initiative has gained renewed momentum under the administration of Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, who has prioritized improvements in the state’s healthcare and education sectors.

In line with this vision, the state government has made significant investments toward the development of a College of Medical and Allied Sciences, laying a solid foundation for the take-off of the MBBS programme.

As part of the verification process, a high-level NUC team is currently on-site to assess the institution’s preparedness. The initiative is expected to expand access to medical education for indigenes and strengthen the state’s healthcare workforce.

The delegation, led by the Director of Academic Planning at the NUC, Abubakar Muhammed Girei, alongside members including Professor Mohamed Manga, Professor Auwal Abubakar, and Mahmud Abdulmajeed, paid a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor to formally present the objectives of their mission.

Speaking during the engagement, Girei emphasized that the Commission’s role is to support the advancement of Nigeria’s university system. He noted that the exercise is not intended to fault the institution but to ensure compliance with established standards through a transparent and objective process.

In his response, the Vice-Chancellor stated that the establishment of the medical college aligns with the broader agenda of Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri to enhance healthcare delivery and reduce pressure on existing medical institutions.

He added that considerable progress has already been made, including the procurement of essential medical equipment, furniture, and academic resources to facilitate the smooth commencement of the programmes.

The NUC team has since begun an extensive inspection of key facilities at the College of Medical and Allied Health Sciences, including laboratories and other critical learning environments, to determine their level of compliance and readiness.

Additional areas visited include the university library, e-library, pre-medical hostels, and staff offices, all of which form part of the comprehensive assessment process.
