Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, then Governor of Kano State from 1999 to 2003, the institution opened its doors to students with the vision of fostering intellectual growth and technological innovation.

Under the leadership of Governor Kwankwaso, the university was founded to address the need for higher education in the region and to contribute to the development of science and technology in Nigeria. Since its inception, the institution has evolved significantly, embracing advancements in education and research.
