The Female Staff Association of Adeyemi Federal University of Education (AFUED), Ondo, has called for strengthened advocacy on women’s rights and gender justice as part of activities marking the 2026 International Women’s Day celebration.
The event, organised by AFUED Female Staff Association (AFUEFSA), held on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, within the university premises and aligned with the global commemoration of International Women’s Day, which was observed worldwide on March 8, 2026, under the theme “Give to Gain: Rights, Justice Action for All Women and Girls.”
Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor of AFUED, Professor Bayode Isaiah Popoola, commended the association for convening the programme, describing it as timely and relevant to ongoing global conversations on gender equity.
He highlighted the role of women in institutional development, noting that the composition of principal officers within the university reflects a strong level of gender inclusion. He further described women as effective managers of resources and emphasized the importance of cooperation between men and women in achieving societal balance and development.
Professor Popoola attributed existing gender imbalance in society to entrenched patriarchal structures, stressing that meaningful progress requires collaboration rather than competition between both genders. He maintained that sustainable development is achievable when men and women work in synergy to build inclusive systems.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ireti Folasade Alao, in her presentation, underscored the importance of sacrifice, shared responsibility, and knowledge exchange within both domestic and professional environments. She cautioned, however, that such contributions must be made in a way that does not disrupt social and institutional harmony.

She also emphasized the role of parental upbringing in shaping responsible citizens, urging parents to serve as role models by fostering cooperation and responsibility within the home.
In her welcome address, the President of AFUEFSA, Mrs. Olusola Eniola Olagundoye, stated that the programme was designed to align the university community with global efforts to promote inclusivity, equity, and shared responsibility. She noted that the celebration was not only a recognition of women’s achievements but also a call for collective participation in building a fair and empowering environment within the university and society at large.
The event featured interactive sessions and discussions on gender equity and social balance, and concluded with the presentation of plaques to the Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor in recognition of their support for gender-related initiatives.
The occasion was attended by principal officers of the university, including the Registrar, Mrs. Olufisayo Fakorede; the Bursar, Mrs. Taiwo Adedoyin; and the University Librarian, Dr. Azino Akpokuriere, alongside deans, directors, staff, and students.
