Ahmadu Bello University Hosts Keynote Lecture on Climate Change Impacts on Nigerian Agriculture

Ahmadu Bello University’s National Agricultural Extension Review and Planning Meeting featured a keynote lecture by Prof. Sani Miko, highlighting the severe impacts of climate change on Nigeria's agricultural sector.

Prof. Miko, a former Country Director of SG 2000 Nigeria and a lecturer at Bayero University, Zaria, outlined rising temperatures, shifting precipitation patterns, and increased frequency of droughts and floods as critical challenges. He also emphasized shifts in growing seasons, crop suitability, pest dynamics, and the negative effects on livestock productivity and health.

To address these challenges, Prof. Miko advocated for the functionalisation of Nigeria's national climate change policy, institutional capacity building, climate information services with early warning systems, and incentives for climate-resilient agriculture.

The lecture, part of the ongoing meeting at the National Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison Services (NAERLS), underscores the urgency of developing adaptive strategies for sustainable agriculture in the face of climate change.
