West Orange High School senior Sahli Negassi has achieved a rare academic milestone by earning a perfect 1600 on the SAT, a feat accomplished by less than 1% of test-takers nationwide each year.

Negassi, born in Manhattan and raised in West Orange, credits his early academic foundation to his older siblings' textbooks, as he never attended preschool. His educational journey took him through Mount Pleasant and St. Cloud elementary schools before progressing to Edison and Roosevelt Middle Schools.

Recalling the moment he saw his perfect score, Negassi shared, "I walked out of my first-period class and immediately called my mom. I showed it to a classmate, but then I got nervous and joked that it was Photoshopped. Even now, it still doesn’t feel real. But more than anything, I was relieved—I had finally proven to myself that it was possible."

Negassi’s preparation was largely self-directed, utilizing free online resources such as Khan Academy, YouTube, and the SAT Educator Question Bank. His rigorous academic schedule, including AP courses in Language, U.S. History, and Calculus, played a crucial role in his success. Managing SAT preparation alongside his AP exams and track championships was a challenge, but he made the most of every opportunity. "Really, the hardest part of studying was finding time. I had to make it whenever I could—at meals, during slow class periods, on bus rides. Taking it one question at a time was good enough."

Beyond academics, Negassi is a well-rounded student leader at West Orange High School. He has been an active member of the cross-country and track teams since seventh grade, served two seasons on the color guard, and holds leadership positions as president of both the math team and the National Honor Society chapter. Additionally, he is a varsity chess team member and part of the Royal Strings ensemble.

West Orange High School Principal Oscar Guerrero praised Negassi’s achievement, stating, "Sahli represents the best of West Orange High School. His accomplishment on the SAT is incredible, but what’s just as impressive is how he manages to excel across so many different activities."

Looking to the future, Negassi hopes to attend Harvard and pursue a career in law. Reflecting on his journey, he offers advice to fellow students: "Be intentional. Know what you want for yourself and throw your whole body at it."

West Orange Schools Superintendent Hayden Moore celebrated Negassi’s achievement as a testament to the school district’s commitment to excellence. "Sahli’s story is one of dedication, balance, and passion. He’s an inspiration to our students and a testament to what can be achieved with perseverance and drive."

As he prepares for the next chapter of his journey, Negassi remains focused on his long-term aspirations. His perfect SAT score is not the final destination but rather a stepping stone toward a future filled with promise, leadership, and impact.
