FUD Student Elected President of African Medical Students Association
Muhammad Alafar, a 400-level medical student at Federal University Dutse (FUD), has been elected President of the Federation of African Medical Students Associations (FAMSA) for the 2024/2025 administrative year.

A 400-level medical student of Federal University Dutse (FUD), Muhammad Alafar, has been elected as the President of the Federation of African Medical Students Associations (FAMSA) for the 2024/2025 administrative year. His victory marks a historic milestone as the first student from Northern Nigeria to hold this prestigious position.
The election took place in November 2024 during the General Assembly of the Federation at Obafemi Awolowo University, where Muhammad emerged victorious after a highly contested election.
Muhammad Alafar is a passionate advocate for public health and a committed leader, with an impressive record of service both locally and internationally. His journey in leadership began in 2020 when he served as a Distinguished Congressman, representing medical students at FUD's Students Representative Assembly (6th Assembly). During the same period, he also held the role of Parliamentary Secretary, showcasing his ability to balance multiple responsibilities effectively.
His leadership trajectory continued in 2022 when he served as the Secretary of the Independent School Electoral Committee. In 2023, he took on the role of Organizing Officer within the same committee, further demonstrating his commitment to excellence, integrity, and critical thinking.
At the national level, Muhammad has been an active member of the Nigerian Medical Students Association (NIMSA). In 2020, he served as the Local Officer for the Standing Committee on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, including HIV and AIDS (SCORA). Additionally, he was the Secretary of the Standing Committee on Research Exchange, contributing significantly to medical research initiatives.
Muhammad’s impact extends beyond Nigeria. Within FAMSA, he served as the Program Officer for the Standing Committee on Health and Environment (SCOHE) in both 2021 and 2022. In 2023, he ascended to the role of Chairperson of FAMSA SCONE, where his exceptional leadership and team-building skills earned him the prestigious Outstanding Executive Council Member of the Year Award.
In 2024, he further cemented his influence by chairing the FAMSA Policy Advisory Council, where he spearheaded the drafting of over ten policy statements presented at the 74th Session of the WHO Afro Meeting in Brazzaville, Congo. Additionally, he played a key role in developing FAMSA’s internal and external policies, as well as a three-year strategic plan for the association.
Muhammad’s involvement in the International Federation of Medical Students Associations (IFMSA) also stands out. He has actively participated in numerous programs and earned the distinction of becoming a Certified IFMSA Trainer, equipping fellow medical students with essential leadership and professional development skills.
His election as FAMSA President is a testament to his dedication to the medical profession and his commitment to effecting positive change within the African medical community. His multifaceted contributions and strong leadership acumen have positioned him as an inspiration to aspiring medical professionals across the continent.
