The Federal Government has announced a major overhaul of the education system, eliminating the Junior and Senior Secondary School structure. The new model, which replaces the 6-3-3-4 system, mandates 12 years of uninterrupted basic education before tertiary education.

Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa revealed this significant reform on Thursday during the 2025 extraordinary National Council on Education meeting in Abuja.

The reform includes setting the minimum entry age for tertiary institutions at 16 years. The minister highlighted that this new system aims to lower dropout rates, remove financial obstacles, and equip students with essential vocational and entrepreneurial skills, thereby aligning Nigeria's education system with global standards.

To implement this change, the government has planned policy reforms, infrastructure expansion, teacher training, and curriculum enhancement.
