ANAN Unveils Landmark Publications to Reshape Accounting Education and Financial Reporting in Nigeria
The Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) has launched two publications aimed at improving accounting education and financial reporting standards in Nigeria. Unveiled at ANAN's 29th Annual Conference, the first publication, "Country Report on Accounting Education in Nigeria", highlights challenges such as outdated curricula and a shortage of qualified educators.
In a move aimed at transforming accounting education and improving financial reporting standards in Nigeria, the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) has launched two critical publications. These were unveiled on the third day of ANAN’s 29th Annual Conference, held at the ThisDay Dome, Abuja, with the theme “Advancing Accounting Excellence in a Changing World.”
Professor Suleiman Aruwa, Chairman of the Country Report on Accountancy Education and Financial Reporting Quality Award Panel, presented the publications on behalf of ANAN. The first publication, titled “Country Report on Accounting Education in Nigeria”, offers a comprehensive analysis of the current state of accountancy education across the nation.
The report identifies key challenges faced by Nigeria's accounting programs, including outdated curricula that do not address emerging fields such as forensic accounting, sustainability reporting, and financial technology. It also highlights the lack of qualified educators and insufficient infrastructure in institutions, which limits students’ ability to gain necessary practical skills.
To address these issues, the report recommends an urgent modernization of accounting curricula, expanded practical training through industry partnerships, and the development of micro-credential programs to bridge the gap between theory and practice.
The second publication, “National Financial Reporting Quality Award”, aims to improve the quality of financial reporting in Nigeria by setting benchmarks and recognizing excellence in financial transparency and accountability. The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and MTN Nigeria PLC took first place in the public and private sector categories, respectively, for their outstanding financial reporting practices.
ANAN’s initiative marks a significant step towards enhancing accounting education and financial reporting quality in Nigeria, ensuring that the profession remains relevant in an ever-changing global landscape.
